Carina Backhuijs is a Dutch jazz harpist. Having studied classical music since she was eight years old, she continued studying at the Havo voor Muziek en Dans at Codarts, Rotterdam, and graduated in 2009. She then decided it was time for her to take on a new challenge. Something that hasn’t been done before, at least not in the Netherlands. In the late summer of 2009 she started her study at the Fontys Conservatory of Music in Tilburg. Ever since, she has been receiving lessons from Rosetty de Ruiter and Jeroen van Vliet, Niko Langenhuysen, Rembrandt Frerichs, Sabien Canton, and has attended several master classes, by prominent jazz musicians such as Harmen Fraanje, Eef van Breen, Rossitza Milevska and Deborah Henson.
She is the first student in the Netherlands ever to take up a study in jazz harp, and is the first one with an official degree in it.
Carina also has her own trio based around the harp, playing together with bass guitar and drums. This results in a truly unique sound, that will surprise anybody who hears it. It adds completely new textures to the well-known sound of a jazz trio.
